Girl lives for days with bullet in head
SACRAMENTO, July 3 (UPI) -- A 7-year-old Sacramento girl was in stable condition as she waits several days to have a 22-caliber bullet removed from her head, officials said Thursday.
Police said Yamilet Leon was close to a park with her brother and uncle Monday when someone opened fire, KCRA-TV, Sacramento, Calif., reported.
Leon complained of pain in her ear shortly after gunshots were heard.
Leon's mother, Maria Calderon, said she saw the bullet when her daughter returned home.
Officials have yet to say how the bullet became lodged in the girl's head, but random gunfire may increase near Independence Day, making such accidents more likely.
"It's something we are trying to get out to the public to avoid these type of incidents and prevent tragedies from occurring," officer Konrad VonSchoeck said.
Leon is expected to live with the bullet in her head until it is surgically removed, the report said.
